Historical note: The 2013 World Championships decathlon in Moscow set a new standard for depth, with an unprecedented 13 athletes scoring over 8300 points, surpassing the previous record of ten at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Ashton Eaton's victory with 8809 points was also historic: he became the first athlete to simultaneously hold the Olympic decathlon title, the world outdoor decathlon and indoor heptathlon titles, and both combined-events world records.
