OR – Olympic record
By 1985 – total recalculated using the 1985 scoring tables

The Points column shows the competition totals under the 1962 scoring tables, based on the officially recorded times in tenths of a second. The Results column restores electronic times to hundredths where available; By 1985 uses those times for recalculation. These recalculated totals are statistical comparisons and do not alter the official finishing order. Toomey’s Olympic record was 8193 points.

Thomas Waddell’s score is shown as the corrected 7719 points; the official report printed 7720.

The competition was held at high altitude (2240 m). A following wind of +3.3 m/s was recorded in the 110 m hurdles heat containing Thomas Waddell, Edward de Noorlander, Walter Diessl, Janis Lanka and Wu Ah-min. Complete long jump wind readings have not been verified, so no combined-events wind classification is assigned here.
