Daley Thompson won his first Olympic decathlon title at the Moscow 1980 Games with 8495 points, equivalent to 8522 under the 1985 scoring tables. The British athlete led a field of 21 competitors from 12 countries, finishing ahead of Soviet silver medallist Yuri Kutsenko and bronze medallist Sergei Zhelanov. Thompson opened with 10.62 in the 100 m and an 8.00 m long jump, but cold, wet conditions on the second day hampered his pursuit of the world record.
