Historical note: During the final 1500 m, Daley Thompson was five seconds behind world-record pace with one lap remaining. Guido Kratschmer, who was passing him, urged him to accelerate. Thompson responded with a remarkable 63.7-second final lap, finishing in 4.23,71 and reclaiming the world record. Asked afterwards why he had not collapsed like the exhausted competitors around him, Thompson joked that there was no room left on the track.
