Daley Thompson successfully defended his Olympic title, having also won the 1980 Moscow Games. The rivalry between Thompson and Jürgen Hingsen was one of the big storylines: both were world record holders in the early 1980s, and their duels were legendary in track & field.

Though as a decathlon fan I always admired Daley accomplishments a lot, I (as a german native) rember having been a little disappointed, when Hingsen failed miserable in the polevault. For a few minutes until Daley under pressure set that phantastic 3rd discus throw, even the gold medal had been realistic ...
In hindsight I have to give that Hingson overall still put together a great decathlon in LA!
From a nitpicking point of view, I even ask myself whether Hingsen who ran the 1500m in 4:22,60 faster than Daley (4:35,00) and finished with 8673 pts(old table) above Jenners result from 1976 hasn't been the holder of the decathlon olympic record - if even for these short 12,40 seconds until Daley arrived?

So they said

The discipline and training applied by decathletes have always been regarded by me as the ultimate in athletic dedication. Whilst it is of course always a huge honour for any decathlete to achieve the ultimate status of World Champion, I cannot help but regard all those who dedicate themselves to this most gruelling of athletic disciplines as Champions - unknown person
