Historical note: The 1987 World Championships brought an end to Daley Thompson's nine-year unbeaten run in completed decathlons. Struggling with injuries and limited preparation, the defending champion briefly led after the 100 m but gradually slipped down the standings. Meanwhile, Torsten Voss took control of the competition on the opening day and maintained his lead throughout, securing victory by 219 points. Heavy rain during the first day's 400 m races added another challenge to an already demanding championship.
Rome 1987 – Two German decathlon stars
Siegfried Wentz of West Germany and Torsten Voss of East Germany. Voss captured the world title with 8680 points, while Wentz secured silver with 8461 points. Their performances put athletes from both German states on the World Championships podium, just three years before German reunification.
