It has been a tradition for the best French pole vaulters to compete in the decathlon in Talence. Thierry Vigneron exceeded the hight of 5.63m. At that time it was the pole vault world record in decathlon.
Olympic Games Seoul 1988
Christian Schenk produced a surprise victory in Seoul, winning decathlon gold at the 1988 Summer Olympics with a total of 8488 points.
Goodwill Games Moscow 1986
Soviet Union swept the men’s decathlon podium at the inaugural Goodwill Games in Moscow. Grigori Degtyaryov won with 8322 points, ahead of Oleksandr Apaichev with 8244 and Aleksei Lyakh with 8082.

East Germany’s Uwe Freimuth wins the decathlon at the 1988 Götzis Hypomeeting with 8381 points, just 19 ahead of Canada’s Dave Steen and fellow East German Thomas Fahner.
