Historical note: A former decathlete made history elsewhere in Munich's Olympic Stadium.
Aleksandr Averbukh, who had finished 6th in the heptathlon at the 1998 European Indoor Championships, won the 2002 European pole vault title with 5.85 m, becoming Israel's first outdoor European Athletics champion. Overcome with emotion during the medal ceremony, he later revealed that his tears were for his late father, to whom he had dedicated the victory.
