Historical note: With just two events remaining, Niklas Kaul was seventh, trailing Simon Ehammer by an astonishing 520 points. A spectacular 76.05 m javelin throw brought him back into contention, before a personal-best 4:10.04 in the 1500 m completed one of the most dramatic comebacks in European decathlon history. Kaul later admitted he had deliberately avoided looking at the standings before the final race and described the home victory as more emotional than his 2019 world title.
Historical note: Arthur Abele's farewell decathlon in Munich turned into an extraordinary emotional rollercoaster. The defending European champion was disqualified for an alleged false start in the 110 m hurdles and left the track in tears, fearing his career would end in heartbreak. After a successful protest, he was allowed to run the hurdles alone, cheered on by more than 20,000 spectators. He finished his final decathlon with 7662 points, but the most memorable moment came afterwards: his fellow competitors formed a guard of honour as the tearful 36-year-old said goodbye to the sport he had devoted much of his life to.
