Historical note: Romain Barras's journey to European decathlon gold began in an unlikely training venue: the hallway of his childhood home. When he was just two and a half years old, his father Pascal Barras, a physical education teacher, arranged shoeboxes as miniature hurdles for him to race over. Nearly three decades later, Pascal watched from the stands in Barcelona, moved to tears as his son became European champion. Romain himself was overcome with emotion as his fellow French decathletes Nadir El Fassi and Florian Geffrouais rushed to embrace him after the final 1500 metres.
