Decathletes compete in the 100m

Sports writers and broadcasters often talk about how the decathlon is as much an athlete’s test against himself as it is against his competition. Devoted decathlon fans know that this ultimate track-and-field challenge is even more than these: it is also a test against every decathlete who ever preceded him as well as a measure against individual world standards.

Thanks to the statistical nature of the decathlon, we can measure a decathlete’s performances in three ways that distinguish its quality from any other sport:

Men’s decathlon all-time best performances
Men’s decathlon all-time best performances — a list of all results scoring 8500 points or more.
Men’s decathlon best performers 1st day >4450 points
Men’s decathlon best first-day performers — a list of decathletes who have scored 4450 points or more after the first five events.
Men’s decathlon best performers 2nd day >4200 points
Men’s decathlon best second-day performers — a list of decathletes who have scored 4200 points or more across the five events of the second day.
