Historical note: Daley Thompson arrived in Helsinki having missed 14 weeks of training because of groin and back injuries, and only decided to compete shortly before the championships. Despite facing world record holder Jürgen Hingsen, the British Olympic champion immediately demonstrated his form by winning the opening 100 m in 10,60 seconds. He went on to claim the first world decathlon title, defeating Hingsen by 105 points.
