Remember bronze medalist Dave Johnson was trying to compete on what I believe was a stress fracture or other lower foot injury. He could not plant his injured foot as well as he liked in one of his very strong events, the Javelin. He threw several feet/meters below his PR. Could he have won gold? Hard to say but that is the perils of training for and competing in the decathlon. Still a great effort!
