The Points column in the records table shows the athlete’s complete decathlon total using the 1985 scoring tables. Day totals and running, jumping and throwing event totals are also calculated using those tables.

Individual-event wind limits and the wind classification of the complete decathlon are separate. A wind-legal individual-event best may therefore come from a decathlon with a wind-assisted total. Wind markers in the Points column describe the complete decathlon.

The two first-day entries distinguish Thompson’s 4603-point performance in Edmonton, where the long jump wind was +6.3 m/s, from his 4602-point performance in Edinburgh, where the long jump wind was +2.1 m/s and no wind reading exceeded +4.0 m/s.

Points – published competition total. For editions before 1985, this may differ from the total recalculated using the 1985 scoring tables.

v – event with wind >2.0 m/s and <=4.0 m/s and wind average for 3 events <=2.0 m/s
v. – all events with wind <=4.0 m/s and wind average for 3 events >2.0 m/s (IAAF rule since 01/01/2010)
W – one event with wind >4.0 m/s and wind average for 3 events >2.0 m/s (IAAF rule until 31/12/2009)

The three-event average refers to the wind readings for the 100 m, long jump and 110 m hurdles. The full stop in v. is significant: v and v. describe different wind conditions. Wind-assisted performances remain valid for competition placings.

By 1985 – total points recalculated using the 1985 scoring tables. A dash indicates that the competition already used those tables. Historical conversions are retained from the competition archives and may differ between sources because of timing precision and the treatment of hand-timed races.
