European Championships Berlin 2018 (0)

Nov 01, 2026
The 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin brought a dramatic changing of the guard in the men's decathlon. At 32, Germany's Arthur Abele overcame years of injuries to capture his first major outdoor championship medal – and European gold – with 8431 points in front of an ecstatic home crowd. The competition took an unexpected turn when world champion and pre-event favourite Kevin Mayer failed to record a valid long jump. Ilya Shkurenyov claimed silver with 8321 points, while Belarus's Vitaliy Zhuk secured bronze with 8290.

Historical note: Arthur Abele's European triumph nearly never happened. Months before Berlin 2018, a tonsil infection passed on by his two-year-old son caused facial nerve paralysis. Abele initially feared he had suffered a stroke, and further Achilles tendon problems left him doubting whether he would compete that season at all. Yet in August, he stood in Berlin's Olympic Stadium as European decathlon champion with 8431 points.
