Historical note: The decathlon at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart was one of the most competitive contests of its era. Dan O'Brien successfully defended his world title with 8817 points, improving his own championship record from Tokyo 1991 by just five points. Remarkably, the reigning world record holder led Germany's Paul Meier by only four points after the opening day, 4598 to 4594.

O'Brien's victory was far from comfortable. Eduard Hämäläinen, representing Belarus, produced an extraordinary second day, beginning with 13,57 in the 110 m hurdles – an exceptional performance within a decathlon. He also threw 49.26 in the discus and cleared 5.30 in the pole vault, eventually finishing with 8724 points, only 93 behind O'Brien. The American entered the final 1500 m with a 97-point advantage and secured the title despite Hämäläinen running slightly faster.

The home crowd witnessed an outstanding German performance. Paul Meier claimed bronze with a personal best of 8548 points, while 1988 Olympic champion Christian Schenk finished fourth with 8500. Germany placed three athletes in the top nine, while the United States had three in the top eight. Eleven competitors reached the prestigious 8000-point mark, and Finland's Petri Keskitalo finished exactly on 8000 points.

Stuttgart was also an important chapter in O'Brien's remarkable career. After failing to qualify for the 1992 Olympic Games, he had set a world record of 8891 points later that year. His Stuttgart triumph became the second of three consecutive world decathlon titles, followed by another victory in Göteborg in 1995 and Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996.
