WL - world lead
v - event with wind >2.0 m/s and <=4.0 m/s and wind average for 3 events <=2.0 m/s.

Didn’t finish:
Ramil Ganiyev (UZB), Sebastian Chmara (POL), Jon Arnar Magnusson (ISL), Brian Brophy (USA), Petri Keskitalo (FIN), Rojs Piziks (LAT), Michael Kohnle (GER), Thorsten Dauth (GER), Antonio Penalver (ESP), Paul Meier (GER), Alain Blondel (FRA).

Historical note: Dan O'Brien's third consecutive world title was remarkable not because of a record-breaking score, but because of his ability to recover from an unusually difficult start. After three events, he trailed American teammate Chris Huffins by 107 points. O'Brien then cleared 2.13 in the high jump to take the lead and finished the opening day with 4528 points, ahead of Huffins (4481) and Estonia's Erki Nool (4328).

Hämäläinen mounted a determined challenge on the second day, winning the 110 m hurdles in 13,73 and throwing 49.96 in the discus. However, O'Brien responded with 5.20 in the pole vault and 62.90 in the javelin, effectively securing another world title before the 1500 m.

One of the most remarkable performances came from Chris Huffins, who ran 10,34 in the 100 m but eventually finished eighth after a difficult 1500 m in 5.03,48. Estonia's three-man contingent also made history with all three athletes finishing among the top eleven, each scoring more than 8000 points.
