Historical note: Erki Nool had his own travelling army of supporters in Budapest: 70 members of the Nool's Fan Club had made the journey from Estonia by coach to cheer him on. They witnessed a dramatic turning point in the javelin, where Nool's 70.65 m throw gave him a decisive advantage over Eduard Hämäläinen, who managed only 55.34 m – 6.50 m short of his personal best. For the travelling Estonian supporters, it became an unforgettable European Championship triumph.
