Historical note: Vasili Kuznetsov's 1692-point winning margin at the 1961 Sofia Universiade remains the largest in the history of the men's Universiade decathlon. A two-time Olympic bronze medallist (1956 and 1960), Kuznetsov also won the pentathlon at the 1959 Turin Universiade, held two decathlon world records during his career, and claimed three consecutive European decathlon titles (1954, 1958 and 1962).
The 1961 Sofia Summer Universiade marked the first appearance of the men's decathlon in Universiade history, following the pentathlon competition held at the inaugural Summer Universiade in Turin in 1959.
