Historical note: Leo Neugebauer came astonishingly close to losing the European title in the final metres of the 1500 m. Holding a 154-point lead over Niklas Kaul before the last event, the reigning world champion suddenly began to stagger down the home straight as exhaustion overwhelmed him. He covered the final 100 metres in approximately 22 seconds before collapsing after the finish. His lead had almost disappeared, but Neugebauer survived by just 38 points to claim European gold with 8611 points.
