Michael Kohnle raised the European Junior Championships decathlon record to 8114 points in Varaždin in 1989. The West German finished 528 points clear of Norbert Lampe, who took silver with 7586, while Britain’s David Bigham secured bronze with 7446.

Historical note: Michael Kohnle’s championship record outlasted his junior career by more than two decades. Set in Varaždin in August 1989, his 8114 points remained unbeaten at these championships until 24 July 2011, when Kevin Mayer scored 8124 in Tallinn — improving the mark by just ten points almost 22 years later.

Vladimir Buryakov won the decathlon at the 1973 European Junior Championships in Duisburg with 7554 points. West Germany’s Dieter Leyckes and Claus Marek completed the podium, separated by just one point in the official standings.

Frank Busemann won the inaugural Ratingen Decathlon in 1997 with 8556 points, ahead of Klaus Isekenmeier (8310) and Stefan Schmid (8279). The first edition featured a strong German field, with four athletes surpassing the 8000-point mark.
