Historical note: Finland’s Torbjörn Lassenius produced an outstanding 64.93 m javelin throw, beating champion Vasili Kuznetsov by 8.73 metres in that event. Despite this advantage and a faster 1500 m, Lassenius finished second, as Kuznetsov’s stronger overall performance secured the European title.
