Didn’t finish:
Eric Gommans (NED), Francisco José Caro (ESP), Oleg Klimovets (BLR).
Historical note: Chiel Warners’ title nearly unravelled in the second event on 24 July 1997. After fouling his first two long jump attempts, the Dutch teenager had just one chance left to avoid a zero. He responded with 7.44 metres on his final attempt — the best jump of the competition — before going on to win the decathlon the following day.
