I wonder why Belarus doesn't send Mihan to Daegu.

Eugene Martineau suffers from injuries. He did not compete a lot at all this year. Hopefully he returns next year (but I have my doubts)

This is a preview of the first three events (first session) . In each event I outline a guide to the scoring system and then my own estimations. While I focus on Hardee vs. Eaton I also give some details about other decathletes. I finish by giving the top performance in each event in the decathlon.

100m
Score - each 0.1 worth 25 points, 10.4 equal 999 points.
The short version - Eaton then Hardee and then the rest
The long version - Eaton is one of the fastest sprinters ever to compete in the decathlon (PB 10.26). He should beat Hardee by 1-2 meters (~40 points). Of the other favourites Kasyanov is likely to finish third whereas Suarez, Knobell and Drozdov are likely to struggle to break 11.00
Decathlon all time best (score higher than 7000):
1. Huffings 10.22
2. Thompson: 10.26
3. O’Brien 10.31
4. Eaton* 10.33
7. Hardee* 10.35
10. Cáceres 10.40
(* competing in Daegu)

Long Jump
score - each 10 cm worth 25 points, 7.76 equal 1,000
The short version - same as the 100
The long version - One of the most important events in the decathlon with only three attempts to get it right and lots of points to lose. JJK missed a gold medal in LA-84 because of this event. Eaton, Hardee and Kasyanov should be 1-2-3 and likely in that order. Eaton once said that he can jump 8.20, if he will do it in Daegu then the gold medal and AR will be his for the taking. Hardee needs to ensure that he will be within 15cm from Eaton otherwise his advantage in the throws may not be enough. If Kasyanov wants a medal he must jump very close to the two Americans.
Decathlon all time best:
1. Nool 8.22
2. Sebrle* 8.11
3. O’Brien 8.08
10. Huffins 8.01

Shot put
score - 1m worth 62 points, 18.40 equal 1000 points
Short version - when the big decathletes are out to put Eaton is in damage control
Long version - Both Eaton and Hardee improve their PB in the last year but Hardee PB is more than a meter better than Eaton. This is the only event in the first day that Hardee is better than Eaton and he must capitalized on his advantage. If by the end of three events Eaton is leading then he is in a good position to win.
Suarez need to throw around 15m in order to have a fighting chance for the bronze. The event winner is likely to be either Karpov(KAZ), Drozdov (RUS) or Smith (JAM).
Decathlon all time best:
1. Hubacher (SUI) 19.17 (only decathletes above 1000 point)
2. Smith (CAN) 18.03
3. Smith* (JAM) 17.78

Hardee is going to win the WC. Before the 1500m Eaton is 32 points behind 2nd placed Suarez. If Eaton is able to run the 1500m faster than 4:20 min, now would be the time to prove it!

Just checked the results of the former world championships since they were held for the 1st time in 1983:

Until 2011, nobody ever won the title with less than 8676 pts (2007 Roman Sebrle)

This Year Hardee set a negative record winning the title with "just" 8607 pts - and the weather conditions did not even look bad ...
