wow this is a very good question, i am fighting and being pulled both ways to get an answer, ashtons running events are so strong but trey has really figured out the decathlon overall and is really close to putting a big discus and javelin together witha multi,

I am going to have to go with Trey this year!

Close, but this year I think Trey!
I saw him in Götzis and if he finds his technique in the throws (about 16.00-48.00-65.00) I think he can hold Ashton.

There are numbers as my tips.

TEGU
Trey - 10,40-780-15,80-200-47,70-13,78-46,50-510-67-4:41,00 = 8835
Ashton - 10,32-790-14,20-206-47,10-13,65-43-520-58-4:25,00 = 8810

It should be super faith in Tegu!

Surely Ashton will be better. I saw that yesterday he run another PB in hurdles - 13,35. Amazing!

Hardee has a Deca record set at 8790 (and 9128 with his PB in the ten events set during multi-events competitions), compare to the Eaton's deca record set at 8457 (-333 points) and 8887 with his PB made during multi-events competitions (-241 points).

Hardee leads the duel with some valuable advance. I'll bet some money on one of them after Eaton will open his outdoor deca season !!

What about Bryan in this battle? Trey is world champion so he has the wild card --> Bryan has to qualify (?)
US Champs gonna be a thriller...

you can never take bryan out of the equation he has smartly competed the last few years so he could save his body for the end of his career! he is very dangerous all the way through 9 events!

dont forget he just pred last year in the 100 meters and hurdles as well!

I'm an Oregon fan so I'm biased but Ashton would be my choice. His PB's are fresh (9 of 10 in past year). He either sets a PB or just misses. On Sat he ran a 13.35 PB after smacking the first hurdle. In the LJ he was just a few cm short of his 8.11 pb.

Eaton, Hardee, and Clay will not meet until Daegu, since Hardee has a bye to the WCs. Since the main goal at the US Championships is to make the team, Clay and Eaton may not go all out there.

On Eaton's PRs: In his case, you can't look only at marks achieved during decathlon competitions. Eaton has competed in relatively few decathlons. He routinely competes in multiple events in open meets. These marks should be fairly comparable to what he can do within a decathlon.

Nevertheless, in Daegu, IMHO, if Clay is fully healthy he wins. His event PRs still sum to a good bit higher score than Eaton's or Hardee's, and he has given indication that when healthy he can still hit them. His performance at Gotzis in 2010, in poor weather conditions, was outstanding - better, I think, than Hardee's this year once you take account of the weather.

But "if fully healthy" is a big "if." Clearly his ability to heal is not what it once was. Hardee and Eaton, with younger bodies, both have a better ability to deal with the tweaks and strains that so often occur during decathlons. Clay doesn't have much margin for error - particularly with two competitors right behind him capable of 8800+.

And then there is Suarez, who PRed and medaled at the OG as a 20 year old and came within 14 points of his PR and medaled at the WCs. He's only a few months older than Eaton and already has those two major medals. He doesn't have the trajectory of event PR's that we see in Eaton, and I doubt that he can score 8800+. But he has a good shot at a medal and, should the Americans stumble at all, he could slip in for the gold.

Of course there are five or six other decathletes with a shot at medals - but that can wait for another day (and the results of Kladno).

Just looked at the entry list for US Nationals. Both Eaton and Hardee are registered for the decathlon (no Clay as yet). Curiously, Eaton and Hardee are both listed as hurdle entrants; with Hardee also in the LJ. Wonder if Hardee plans to actually compete in the decathlon. Is he required to at least start in the decathlon to cash in on the automatic qualification to World's?
