Estonia won European Cup Combined Events Super League (1)

July 03, 2005

With another day of good weather conditions, the second day of the European Cup Combined Events Super League in Bydgoszcz once again resulted in many PBs being set and a close competition for both individual and team honors.

In the team event, the Estonian team retained the title they won last year with 23139 points, ahead of Russia's total of 22711 points and Spain's 22482. After a close battle for the remaining places, Italy and Poland, in that order, took the remaining places in the top six, while Germany finished last and was relegated to compete in next year's First League.

The leader after day 1, the 21-year old Estonian Mikk Pahapill went even better on day 2 to win with a margin of 382 points and score 8149 points, thereby improving his PB from last year by an incredible 923 points. The remaining places on the individual podium were taken by the Russian Nikolai Tishchenko with 7767 and the Spanish athlete David Gomez Martinez with 7698. The Estonian is eligible to participate in this year's European U23 Championships, but with the competition only 11 days away, he is not sure yet whether he will recover quickly enough to make the trip to Erfurt.
