Scoring tables for combined events (0)

Jan 23, 2026
The current combined events scoring tables have been used without modification since the 1985

The IAAF (now World Athletics) combined events scoring tables for the decathlon (and heptathlon) were introduced in 1985, and they have been used ever since without any official modification to the scoring formulas.

A bit of context:

  • Before 1985, several different scoring tables were used (notably 1920, 1934, and 1962 versions)

  • The 1985 tables were designed to better balance events and reflect modern performance levels

  • Since their adoption, no revised tables have been officially approved or implemented, despite periodic discussions and proposals (for example in the 2000s and 2010s)
