Bulgarian men’s decathlon had its glory days and its great heroes. But those proud traditions were lost somewhere in the past. Who knows – maybe one day a new prodigy will emerge to revive what has been long forgotten.
It has been a long time since a Swiss man exceeded 8000 points for decathlon. It was in 2003, to be exact, when Rolf Schläfli achieved 8019 in Götzis and became only the 5th man ever over 8000.
New Zealand men’s decathlon all-time list up to 7600 points. At the summit of New Zealand’s decathlon history stands Simon Poelman, whose remarkable 8366-point performance in Christchurch back in 1987 still holds as the national record.
In 1988, Külvet surpassed his best decathlon with a score of 8506 points in Staiki, Belarus. This achievement placed him second in the world that season, just behind Christian Plaziat of France.
At the 2010 Barrientos Memorial - a prestigious annual track and field meet held in Cuba - Yordani García delivered an outstanding performance in the decathlon, scoring 8381 points.
