I read once, not sure if it is true, that Hershel Walker in high school was his state's champ in both the 200m and the shot put. That's an impressive double. Surely there were coaches who would've loved to train Hershel for the decathlon when he was younger.

What other athletes, from other sports, do you think could break 8,000?

Track guys are interesting too, since they'd be easier to persuade to give it a go. The appeal to guys in other sports would be if you could actually get them to do it. Sort of like a Celebrity Decathlon. They do Celebrity Madden video game tourneys where guys from the NBA/NFL enter. We could do one for the decathlon. They have have Clay, Trey and Ash as coaches. Each of them has 2 weeks to train their squad.

Anyone remember Bernie Williams, from the Yankees? I used to think he'd make a great decathlete. He had that thing similar to Hershel Walker where he looking like he was jogging if you saw him in isolation, but if you widened the shot to include others you realized he was moving across the earth at a very fast speed. He was tall and light when he was younger. He was a power hitter, so very strong rotational strength. He was a switch hitter, some years hit over .350 and was a guitar player, so he had that ability to store away athletic moves for when needed.

Perhaps most importantly, Bernie was often, and this was very frustrating to Yankee fans, he was often caught day dreaming in center field. They guy wasn't motivated to play baseball. He would've probably been happier in the decathlon. Do your technical, physical thing, then laugh and joke with your friends for 30 minutes, then repeat.

In his prime, I think Michael Jordan would be a possiblity. According to him, he cleared 6'5" in high jump and 23' in long jump in high school while "fooling around". He played a lot of baseball and golf, so he probably has some decnt rotational strength. Also, he's 6'6" and has long levers and a pretty high release point. He's probably a decent natural sprinter. Obviously he'd need training, but he definitely has a pretty impressive foundation to start from
