Here's why I agree with you. Take his 6568 WR heptathon total and use it as a base for the seven equivalent decathlon events. Then add 1,000 for the 400. With his throwing improvement -- getting 1500 between the disc and javelin would give him 9068 (well over the 9026 WR).

Another point - when he doesn't PR this spring, he just misses one.

The 6568 WR heptathlon total as a base for seven decathlon events? That's too simple.
It means e.g. this:
7.60 on the 60 m. hurdles = 1085 points.
Equivalent 110 m. hurdles: 13.17 (1084 points)
2.34.74 on the 1000 meters = 933 points.
Equivalent 1500 meters: 4.02.85
Impossible.
On the other hand: Eatons long jump and high jump during his 6568 were not very succesfull. He can do much better than 7.77 and 2.01.
We'll see in Götzis!

I concede your point on the invalidity of equating the 1000 meter point total with a 1500 point total. However, as you correctly point out his normal lj and hj would more than offset that discrepancy.

You are correct that he won't run 13.17 in the hurdles, but 13.3x is in the cards. Yesterday he ran 13.52 in the rain with no competition for a PR, ran a 45.91 400 relay leg and went 7.81 in the long jump on only 2 jumps.

This summer should be very interesting.

$1 that Eaton runs a faster hurdle and 400 than they predict.

OK, so after US championships, note that if he is able to improve his throws up to 800 points each, that adds 300 points to his 8729, resulting in a new WR.

I think Ashton likely improvement will come to the jumps and not the throws.
In the last US championship Eaton jump 7.80, 2.05 & 5.05.
Improving these marks to:
8.05, 2.15 & 5.30 should be possible to someone of his athletics capabilities.
This will give him 3021 points compared with 2,786 in Eugene.
Add, a normal DT (~45) and the WR is within reach.
This I believe will happen before he will throw (~15.20,~ 47,~64) to get a "throw base" WR

On paper the jav looks like the most fertile ground. However, attempting a full Jan Zelezny style jav throw is risking injury. You can injure many different parts of the body in the jav, if something goes wrong.

If 8729 is in contention for the gold in London maybe Ashton is smart to wait until a week after that competition ends before attempting to learn the jav. It's sort of the same rational Usain Bolt has about the Long Jump.

Ultimately, it's Mr. Eaton's decision. If he loses by 50 points I don't want to be credited with saying the jav isn't important.

Perhaps you're right, Olorin, since Eaton does have better PRs in the jumps than he has done in decathlons (8.04, 2.11, 5.26).
On the other hand, those are already awfully good marks, while his throws are pretty bad. And he has made big progress lately--all his throw pRs have been this year.
Maybe some kind of combo.
I could definitely see jumps of 8.0, 2.10, 5.15, and throws of 15, 46, 60 this year.
