Mr. Decathlon Frank Zarnowski writes very well about the problems regarding the new wind rule for combined events competition. check this link for his comments.

I really think this rule will only cause problmes. It won't really help anyone. Those extra points you gain in the short sprints and long jump from 2 m/s windspeeds, you often loose in another event. Look at Ashton Eatons results from this weekends Texas relays. what he won in the 100m, long jump and hurdles he probably lost in the pole vault and 1500m alone.

The old rule worked well, bring it back as soon as possible I would say.

A small correction..... "Those extra points you gain from PLUS 2 m/s windspeeds" ...was what I intended to write

I totally agree with the other posts. Why was this new rule introduced with apparently no previous consultation and consideration for its implications. Although I'm now a Masters competitor and it may not apply/impact I still would like to understand the rational for this change.

As I understand the total sum of the winds in the three performances can never be more than 6.0 m/sec !

4.1/ 1.9/ 0.0 = total of 6.0 is legal

3.9/ 2.1/ 0.1 = total of 6.1 is illegal

-4.1/ 5.9/ 4.1 = total of 5.9 is legal

6.8/-4.9/ 4.1 = total of 6.0 is legal

Am I right?

As at April 10th

68 decathlon > 6800 points

5 with no wind information

42 legal

21 illegal

Very bad news! Fast calculation confirm us that more than 30% of all decathlons are wind-aided.

Frank Zarnowsky offer a few of thoughts about the new IAAF "Wind-Aided" rule right here:
