Topic: Gotzis 2013: Eaton Out
According to Eaton's coach today, Ashton will not compete at Gotzis due to a minor injury. Eaton must finish in the top 3 at the US champtionships to compete in the World Championships, and Gotzis is just too close to those championships to risk further injury.
Topic: Uibo 8223
In Georgia yesterday and today: 10.99, 7.82, 12.73, 2.05, 50.94, 14.93, 49.14, 4.95, 59.21, 4:30.60 Huge 600+ PR.
Topic: Will Suarez medal in Daegu?
Suarez has medaled in the OG and in the only WC in which he competed. This year, he won in Kladno and was 2nd to Hardee at Gotzis. But he has not come close to his 8654 PR since 2009. Because he is still young, I expected him to improve over these last two years. So let's look to see which of his performances dropped off. Consider these numbers: First column: average performance …
Topic: Fastest 100m times, adjusted
This must have been done before by someone, by I haven't seen it. I use the Mureika calculator adjusting for wind and altitude. I list the thousandths just to show the rank order via the calculator, but surely that last digit is not significant. Numbers are actual, wind reading, adjusted time. 1. Huffins Atlanta 96 10. 22 0. 9 10. 279 2. O'Brien Tokyo 91 10. 41 ‐1. 6 10. …
Topic: Best performance compared to WR in a decathlon
At the Track and Field News board, there's a topic asking what decathlete came closest to the WR in an individual event. We're looking only post 1950, in > 7000 pt decathlons, measuring the difference with present scoring tables. So far C. K. Yang's 1963 4. 84 PV when the WR was 5. 00 is the closest we have found ‐ a 48 point difference. Join the discussion. Here's …
Re: Decathletes: PB Correction and Improvement Thread
Eaton yesterday at Harry Jerome Classic: SP 14.69 400 46.24
Re: USA Championchips
Pappas is not yet entered. I doubt that he is competing.
Re: USA Championchips
Olorin, you could well be right about Eaton. We shall see. Also, I understand Joe Detmer is competing, tho he is not yet on the entry list. If this information is accurate, he could be in the mix for the last spot.
Re: USA Championchips
I meant that Hardee will not compete IN THE DECATHLON at USATF. Rules say he has to compete in something - He's entered in the hurdles and the LJ.
Re: USA Championchips
Hardee is definitely not competing at USATF ‐ he has a buy to Daegu as defending champion. For Eaton and Clay, the key is qualifying and being ready for the WCs; winning this meet is not important. Neither one wants to pull a Dan O'Brien! Since, with Hardee's bye, three other Americans will qualify, even a score of 8300 should be enough to get through. The tense competition likely …
Re: Beach and Klech
Beach's running events sum to 3712 (10.78 46.90 14.76 3:59.13) placing him 3rd on the all time list for running events - with the asterisk for the 2nd night f sleep.
Re: Ashton or Trey?
Eaton, Hardee, and Clay will not meet until Daegu, since Hardee has a bye to the WCs. Since the main goal at the US Championships is to make the team, Clay and Eaton may not go all out there. On Eaton's PRs: In his case, you can't look only at marks achieved during decathlon competitions. Eaton has competed in relatively few decathlons. He routinely competes in multiple events in …
Re: Beach and Klech
Also a pending American Junior Record by Lazas in 10th place (7802). But the competition was supposed to take place Wednesday and Thursday. After a late start Thursday morning because of thunderstorms, and then more thunderstorms that halted the JT after most competitors had taken only one throw, the NCAA halted competition Thursday night at 10: 30pm, making the decision to resume it Friday …
Re: Fastest 100m times, adjusted
Another correction: In the list including all 7000+ decathlons, the adjusted time for Huffins in New Orleans 1992 should be 10.412. Not sure where that big error came from . . .
Re: Fastest 100m times, adjusted
A few corrections to the above lists, thanks to a careful reader at the trackandfieldnews.com board: Adjusted time for Clay 07 Gotzis should be 10.385, not 386 Adjusted time for Clay 06 Gotzis should be 10.398, not 400 Wind speed for Eaton 10 Eugene should be 0.5, not 0.9. The calculation was done with the correct windspeed; the error was in the transcription. More corrections welcome!
Re: Oldest decathalete ever to score 8000???
It was remarkable that, in a lengthy, high-quality career, that decathlon when Kip was just shy of 36 was his 4th highest score, and his best ever day 2 score. Sebrle is now 36. He certainly is still capable of 8000+. Let's hope he does it.
Re: Fastest 100m times, adjusted
Here's the list lowering the decathlon score requirement to 7000. I'm less confident here ‐ there may have been races run in 10. 5x with strong negative winds by less well known decathletes that I've missed. 1. Huffins Atlanta 96 10. 22 0. 9 10. 279 2. O'Brien Tokyo 91 10. 41 ‐1. 6 10. 305 Huffins Talence 97 10. 29 1. 4 10. 367 3. Clay Eugene 08 10. 39 ‐0. 4 10. …
Re: Fastest 100m times, adjusted
Here is a corrected list. I had overlooked some performances by Clay, O'Brien, and Huffins that make the list. 1. Huffins Atlanta 96 10. 22 0. 9 10. 279 2. O'Brien Tokyo 91 10. 41 ‐1. 6 10. 305 Huffins Talence 97 10. 29 1. 4 10. 367 3. Clay Eugene 08 10. 39 ‐0. 4 10. 370 4. A couple of more videos: Jenner in Montreal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9CWFq2exlY Sebrle’s WR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0iNamrYAVA This is an excellent video, 8:33 long with slow motion replays of most of the field events. If you've never seen this footage before, the joy and exhaustion after Roman completes the 1500 is priceless. Audio is in German.

Here's a 2 1/2 minute summary of the 1960 Olympic Decathlon battle between Rafer Johnson and C. K. Yang ‐ short, but quite well done: http: //www. youtube. Another Thompson video, this time much less fuzzy: From the '83 Helsinki WC's. Day 1 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiWkjM4Rc3Q&feature=related Day 2 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7vITp3uoYo&feature=related
Re: New version of Decathlon 2000 is coming
I like gcsixty6's suggestion from several months ago: Including a list of links to online videos of past great decathlons. Here is a rather fuzzy but interesting video of Thompson's '84 OG decathlon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sSF1a2dww0&feature=player_embedded#!
Re: New version of Decathlon 2000 is coming
I like the new design. One comment on web design: I'd suggest changing from default Arial font to one that works more consistently on LCD screens, such as Trebuchet or Tahoma.
Re: European Championships Barcelona
Sintnicolaas comes through with a decathlon PR 62. 57 on his last throw to stay in the hunt. Others fall short of predictions; it looks like Barras and Sintnicolaas will battle it out for the gold and silver. Barras is 5 points ahead ‐ so Sintnicolaas needs to beat him by about . 8 seconds in the 1500. On paper, Barras looks to be a few seconds faster, so is clearly the favorite. …
Re: European Championships Barcelona
Adding Pahapill to projections: 63, 4: 35, 8380. He would be right there after the JT. When following JT and 1500, note that at these levels each meter is worth about 15 points in the JT, and each second about 7 points in the 1500. For the top 4, performances in the JT and 1500: Barras: JT: Decathlon PR 65. 84 from 2005; hit 64. 68 last year. Most often in the range of 61 to 63. …
Re: European Championships Barcelona
Wow. What a PV competition! This is very, very tight. I anticipate the following for the top 3: JT Barras 63 Sintnicolaas 61 Krauchanka 61 1500 Barras 4: 24 Sintnicolaas 4: 27 Krauchanka 4: 35 With these projections, the final scores work out to Barras 8440 Sintnicolaas 8430 Krauchanka 8425 In other words: any of these three has a great shot at winning. Barring some huge PR in the JT, …
Re: Hypomeeting 2010 Götzis
Wiberg also is not listed on the official list of participants, though he was reported as a competitor earlier in this thread. Anyone know what the situation is?
Re: Hypomeeting 2010 Götzis
. . . And the start lists do not include Suarez or Garcia. Anyone have further word on this?
Re: Redefining the decathlon scoring method
Oldtimer2 is right. Another problem with simply using percentage of the WR is that it treats each cm or second improvement in an event as equal. And that is simply not the case. It's much harder to improve from 10. 30 to 10. 20 in the 100m than to improve from 11. 30 to 11. 20. It's much harder to improve from 8. 00 to 8. 10 in the LJ than to improve from 6. 50 to 6. 60. The point …
