yes he does and i keep looking at it and asking how is this possible? because none of his marks besides javelin look that extraordinary. but if you look all the way across his results with the javelin make it so high. most guys are great at just 4 not all 5 on day two he was great at all 5!

First of all, a great statistical work has been done here, I really enjoy this stuff a lot!
I'd however suggest a small adaption: why not leave results out with more than 4m/s wind assist. In the top lists decathlon wind assisted results with more than 4m/s do not count regular. Why do they count here in this list?
Isn't the most interesting part of this list to see how much an athlete loses in his top decathlon result to his PB? And if so, why comparing (way) irregular results with regular results. Especially long jump from Daley Thompson and 110 m Hurdles from Roman Sebrle caught my attention. How much weight does it have to compare a result as a part of a regular decathlon to a result under conditions where the wind has blown with more than 6m/s?

Correction, my fault, when Sebrle ran the 110 m hurdles in 13,68 s, the wind was just 2,6 m/s.

My question - how much farther will the active decathletes move up? I see Clay moving to #2. I can see Eaton and Hardee cracking top 10 in a few years. Maybe by 2012. They both could make #5 one day. Sebrle could pass Smith; Clay doubtful. Krauch should make top 20 one day - maybe higher. Karpov has a chance at top 10. Smith and Suarez both should be close to 9000.

I think sebrle can not pass smith because he has not had a personal best since 2007 in javelin i think and at his age to pr in something would be amazing, that being said i dont want to underestimate him. maybe he could pr in disc or javelin...shot?

wow that is very interesting i think he has so much more potential in obviously all of the throws that is where he will gain many more points, but he also has points to gain in long jump and high jump in my opinion.

You do have Trey Hardee with 2,05 high jump in this list and with 2,06 on his personal profile (the total of 9193 pts however is the same on both pages)
Greetings, Sven

Dan O'Brien still is the overall benchmark in terms of Decathlon total points based on personal best by 200+ points. In a virtual one on one match up 24 of the listed guys would win 3 or less field events against him, Motti would win 4 and Nool 5.
But with his 8,16m Ashton Eaton now has surpassed O'Brien in the long jump.
This makes him the only guy on this list who virtually could beat O'Brien one on one; he now has better marks in 6 of the 10 events!

How about a separate list for the all-time greats? i.e. Thorpe, Holdorf, Yrjola, Lipp, Morris, Mathias, Johnson, Campbell, Avilov, Jenner. It would be interesting to see all their bests.
