Under the new scoring tables, Mayer would lose the world record. On one hand, this seems logical—the previous tables were incorrect. On the other, Mayer took advantage of those flawed tables by specializing more in the javelin—and to some extent the pole vault and discus—which offered higher point yields; meanwhile, he put little effort into the 1,500 meters (an event where he is weak), since it wasn't necessary and the world record was already his.
