I am posting the Deca list for the past 2 years to start the discussion on who will win in Daegu. I think results for the past 12-15 months are a good barometer to start with.
2010-2011 DECATHLON LIST
1. 8729 Ashton Eaton 6/11
2. 8689 Trey Hardee 5/11
3. 8483 Bryan Clay 5/10
4. 8453 Romain Barras 7/10
5. 8440 Leonel Suarez 5/11
6. 8436 Eelco Sinticolaas 7/10
7. 8398 Mikk Pahapill 5/11
8. 8397 Yordani Garcia 5/11
8. 8381 Olexiy Kasyanov 6/10
10. 8371 Andrei Krauchanka 7/10

Based on these numbers, Hardee and Eaton will battle for gold and bronze is wide open. Any thoughts? Any decathletes not on the list that could surprise and medal?

It will be a super exciting decathlon in Daegu. I really hope Clay will get there injury free and in good shape. A battle between Hardee, Clay and Eaton will be a gentlemens fight. Suarez (and maybe Garcia) could possibly play along at the very top as well. The best europeans are hard to predict. It all comes down to injury status during the summer. Maybe Pahapill will be in Torino 09 shape?

I will go for Trey Hardee as the winner. He seems to be building up to Daegu in a confident and controlled way.

I think you've identified all the likely contenders: Eaton and Hardee battle for gold (edge to Hardee for his experience), with a real battle for third. I fear Clay won't be in top shape, don't know if Barras is, and don't trust Garcia to rise to the occasion. I think Suarez likely edges the pack, with Krauchanka a threat if healthy, and Sintnicolaas, Pahapill and Kasyanov to follow.

I'll be very interested to see if Knoble can build on Gotzis, if Schrader can return to top form at Ratingen, and if any of the up-and-comers, including Freimuth, Warner, Van der Plaetsen, and Mayer, are ready to take a step forward.

There is nobody missing anymore...
As TimR I think Hardee is the favourite, Eaton close behind and Clay not in top shape. If so hte battle for bronze will be open - Suarez, Sintnicolaas, Pahapill, Clay.
I fear Krauchanka, Kasyanov, Barras also not in top shape.

Maybe we know more after Ratingen.

Unfortunately we won't see Schrader. He is again out for the season due to a foot surgery.

Thanks for the update on Schrader, Christoph. Ugh, he's really had no luck since that breakout in Gotzis in 2009. Health is a talent, I guess.

Surprised to see Eaton gets no love. Vote is 3-0 for Hardee so far. I'll cast a vote for Ashton to make it 3-1. 8729 for the first decathlon in a year is not bad. He won't do worse than that at World's.

Eaton had 2 PB's in three events at the Thorpe Cup in Chula Vista yesterday. A wind legal 100 of 10.26 and a hj of 2.10. Hardee ran 10.53 and a sub-par lj. Eaton does the disc and vault today.

Eaton's 4 events this weekend resulted in 3 PR's and one near miss. He would have scored 170 extra points at the Us Nationals in June if those marks were substituted. 8729 + 170 =8899 - an intriguing number.

During the live coverage of the event, both Dan O'Brien, and later Ashton Eaton himself, remarked that setting a PB when doing an event here and there is much easier than doing so within a full decathlon - and thus, that these pbs, while encouraging, should be taken with a grain of salt. In particular, they talked of how much easier it is to get a long discus throw without the preceding 400m and hurdles. So I'd be careful with the straight addition But Eaton does look to be ready for a big score.

(Also, Hardee's poor long jump was due to the intentionally short run-up he took on each attempt, and should not be seen as the disappointment it would be were he jumping normally).

All very intriguing leading into Daegu.

Is Clay ready to compete? He was scheduled for six events at the Thorpe Cup, but dropped out after a 10.8 hundred. This after dropping out of the US Nationals after falling in the hurdles. He certainly has the biggest question mark by his name.

I expect:

Hardee
Eaton
Suarez

I hope (not really realistic maybe):

Behrenbruch shows what he can (around 8500),
Knobel makes +8400,
Sebrle surprises with 8400,
Draudvila makes his first 8100 and is during the first six events in the top group.

Just only 4 days waiting...very nice for us that decathlon is this time at the weekend; we will have a little decathlon-party at home with many coffee and an early breakfast watching TV.

I'd say
#1 Hardee (8823) because of experience
#2 Eaton (8799) but he's my big favorite for the Olympics and
#3 Suarez (8501)

Too bad I'm not there, but I'm at Woerden (http://meeting.clytoneus.nl/) for the decathlon (as a coach that is )
